The Happening: "The scariest movie on the planet." The scariest movie on the planet. It's an understatement, but that's exactly how director M. Night Shyamalan who brought us The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable was billed before releasing his most recent film, The Happening. All caught up in preparations for a special school assembly with students from across the globe, Elliot Clark comes to realize that there is something very wrong going on in Philadelphia. He fights back against nature as nature starts to fight back against him. The Happening is one of those rare films that, after you leave the theater, all you want to do is lie on the couch and watch it again. And again. And then some more. The movie's scares are ingenious, creating a sense of impending doom that will have you scurrying for your remote control before your fingers dig into the foam cushioning of the couch like a little kid on Christmas morning. The special effects are undoubtedly top-notch, managing to build suspense with very little dialogue at all. Shyamalan knows how to keep things simple, relying on our primal instincts to keep us engaged. There are earthquakes, swarms of bees, creepy vines, even a monkey or two. All brought to life with stunning effects that make you feel as if you are right there in the middle of it all. The Happening is definitely not for the faint of heart - hence its R rating - but if you are looking for an engaging film that will have you jumping out of your seat and possibly checking the closet before bedtime then The Happening is exactly what you're looking for.The Happening has received mixed reviews from film critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 33% based on 189 reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "The Happening's attempts at emotional resonance are as half-baked as its science." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 47 out of 100 based on 30 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Much criticism came from Shyamalan's decision to make the movie into a horror film; indeed many critics seem to regard him more as a sci-fi/fantasy director. In contrast, it received a positive review from Roger Ebert. In his review he called it "one of the best movies of the year", saying that "The Happening is a masterpiece of suspense that almost never goes anywhere." The Happening was released on DVD and Blu-ray on January 23, 2009. The Happening was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Ontario and Philadelphia, PA. The Philadelphia scenes were shot at Quaker City Mall, High Street and Haverford Ave for the first half of the movie and Walnut Hill Park for the second half. Hollywood movie studios keep changing their minds about where their movies will be filmed as they shoot them. cfa1e77820
