The film won five Panavision Awards including Best Director and Best Cinematography. This website offers information on the cast of characters, actors, production crews and more. You'll find further insights into the story's themes along with behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the film. Elena is eighteen and lives at home with her mother and stepfather and three younger sisters, one of whom is a twin. The family has just moved to a new town for her stepfather's work. Elena's mother has always favored her oldest daughter, but she wants Elena to give up the look she wants to keep until she can find a better way of earning money than stripping at the local strip club. When Elena gets arrested for alcohol possession one night during a party at their house that goes bad, she's forced to live with the consequences – and become more responsible – until she can straighten things out with her parole officer. Elena's younger sisters are a handful, defying her authority and trying to get her into trouble. Her eldest, Anya, is getting married and her mother has planned a party at their new house for the wedding. The twins insist on dressing up as females for the party and start making out with each other. Elena tells her mother that she won't go to the party because she views it as an excuse for more drinking and strip clubs. But then she takes matters into her own hands and starts attending parties that aren't planned by her parents, just so that it will keep her out of trouble – until she manages to get arrested again. The movie begins with Elena's mother giving her daughter an ultimatum: stay out of trouble, or move out. Elena agrees to do so after she tries to explain her side of the story. She then watches in horror as her mother and stepfather start arguing in front of the family when the new house is still under construction. Elena has an affair with a college professor who's married and comes to regret it when she discovers his wife has cancer. Anya gets engaged to someone else, but still wants Elena at the wedding, so she manages to get off the hook by saying that she'll be living in Montreal for school. Elena has an opportunity to attend university in the United States, but her mother says no, blaming it on Elena's history of bad decisions. She's very envious of her younger sister, who is getting married to a nice young man while she still lives at home with her parents. She also attends another party with a friend who makes out with Elena, but gets pushed away when another man comes on to Elena before she has time to make any decisions. At the end of the film, she writes letters to anyone who'll listen to her side of the story about how she was treated unfairly by her family and by others around them. 61cfa1e7782042
