Alcoholic hepatitis is a disease with varying outcome in different age groups. There are no data on the prognosis of patients with alcoholic hepatitis according to age. The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of age and liver disease severity on the outcome of patients with alcoholic hepatitis. Sixty-nine patients with alcoholic hepatitis admitted to the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Medical University of Łódź, were enrolled in the study. All patients were divided into three groups according to the age: A: patients aged or =60 years (n=17). The severity of liver disease was assessed by Child-Pugh score. The study was conducted from November 1995 to February 2001. The primary endpoint of the study was death from any cause during the follow-up. During a median follow-up of 24 months (range 1-132) a total of 19 deaths occurred. Death occurred during the first 3 months after hospitalization in 14 patients (33.3%), 5 in group A (22.7%), 6 in group B (20%) and 8 in group C (47.1%). The 5-year survival rate was 38.5+/-8.7% and was significantly lower in group C (p=0.006) and in patients with Child-Pugh score B (p=0.03).
